Open Lecture on "Scientific Research Integrity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence"

May 13, 2025

On May 13, an open lecture, "Scientific Research Integrity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence", was held. Among the organisers are the Alliance of Ukrainian Universities, the Library of the Ukrainian Catholic University, the Library of Sumy State University, the National University of Water and Environmental Engineering, and the Scientific Library of the National University of Ostroh Academy.

The lecture was moderated by Oksana Mykytyn, Director of the Library of the Ukrainian Catholic University.

The following speakers talked about the challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities in the research field:

  • Oleksandr Krakovetskyi – Cand.Sc. (Engineering), international expert in artificial intelligence, co-founder of DevRain, author of the "ChatGPT, DALL-E, Midjourney: How generative artificial intelligence is changing the world" Book;
  • Inna Koblianska – Candidate of Sciences (Economics), Associate Professor at Sumy State University, Head of the Jean Monnet Chair and founder of the Scientific Coffee House;
  • Kateryna Yakunina  – Cand.Sc. (History), Rector's Assistant for Strategy and Educational Quality Assurance, a historian and coordinator of educational projects;
  • Yaryna Pikulytska – a paediatrician, founder of the 'Vulyk' family outpatient clinic, and bioethics expert, chair of the UCU Institutional Ethics Council.

The lecture discussed changes in science due to the influence of artificial intelligence, maintaining academic integrity by researchers, the impact of AI on critical thinking, problems and challenges of AI, the fair use of AI in research, modern AI tools that open up new opportunities for researchers, etc.

At the end of the lecture, the participants also focused on the problems of moral responsibility and the use of modern technologies in science while maintaining its reliability and ethical standards.

"Technological development has always led to society's transformation (adaptation). The current pace of AI development once again makes us think about the importance of the ethical, legal and value principles and norms that have regulated (guided) human interaction for centuries. It is especially true in science based on objectivity, reliability, conceptual and logical consistency, and social benefit. Modern society and scientists must understand (respect) the importance of the time-tested principles of academic integrity and the truth of scientific knowledge, and learn to use new technologies, including AI."

Kateryna Yakunina said.

Halyna Tsepiuk, Director of the Scientific Library, noted that within the framework of cooperation with the library of the Ukrainian Catholic University, the Ostroh Academy Library has identified specific tasks and opportunities, one of which is the participation of researchers in the project "Academic Ethics and Integrity Politics".

"In the context of cooperation, today's lecture was a valuable contribution to raising awareness and stimulating discussion on the ethical aspects of scientific activity in the digital age. We hope for further fruitful cooperation and exchange of experience with the UCU library in this important area."

Halyna Tsepiuk summed up.
