The winners of the essay contest on public health were defined

At the National University of Ostroh Academy it was summarized the results of an online student essay contest on "Public Health: My Understanding" conducted by the Department of Public Health at the NUOA.

The competition had going on from February 12 to April 15. During this time 36 works from pupils of Rivne region were being received, from which the jury chose 8 the best ones. The Commission for the Verification of work was headed by Nataliia Kulesha, a Lecturer at the Department of Public Health, as well as a consultant at the Center for Professional and Career Orientation.

Ihor Hushchuk, a Head of the Department of Public Health of the NUOA, said that the theme of the essay was chosen precisely to promote a true understanding of the notion of public health, its importance to society, and to focus on this attention of adolescents.

«At the moment, even in the medical environment, few people understand what" public health "is. In most, it is positioned as an integral part of the medical system or the fight against socially dangerous diseases, etc. However, this definition is much more complex in its essence, more profound and multifaceted. World Health Organization defines it as the science and practice of disease prevention, increasing the duration of active life and improving health through the organized efforts of the entire society. We understand that it is much more important to prevent a disease than to treat it later. If people hope that a system of the Ministry of Healthcare will make our nation healthy, it is an illusion. First of all, everyone has to take care of his/her own health, a healthy lifestyle, a healthy environment, as well as the state and non-state institutions must ensure the implementation and observance of the national principle of “health care in all state policies”.»– explains Ihor Hushchuk.

Other five works jury members additionally noted special certificates.

In addition to awarding the winners within the framework of Research and Development Centre "Human Ecology and Public Health" activities, an express test for measurement of nitrates in vegetables and fruits has been conducted, which is extremely relevant for citizens now.
