Intercultural Dialogue and Academic Cooperation: Ostroh Academy Hosts Online Lecture Marking International Africa Day

May 26, 2026

On May 26 the National University of Ostroh Academy hosted an open online lecture to celebrate International Africa Day, which is observed annually on May 25. The event served as an important platform for intercultural dialogue, academic exchange, and deepening cooperation between Ukraine and African nations.

The lecture was organized as part of the Memorandum of Understanding between the National University of Ostroh Academy and Kenyatta University. Hosting this event marks another step forward in boosting international cooperation and developing partnerships between the two universities.

The guest of honor and keynote speaker was Dr. Hamisi Babusa, a lecturer in Swahili and language education, who also heads the Department of Educational Communication and Technology (COMTECH) at Kenyatta University. During the lecture, participants had the opportunity to learn more about Kenya's history, culture, traditions, and educational system. The speaker paid special attention to the country's linguistic diversity, the role of the Swahili language in society, the specifics of school education, intercultural communication, and the traditional values of Kenyan society. Students and faculty also explored various cultural customs, social dynamics, and contemporary challenges facing education in African countries.

The meeting sparked great interest among both students and professors, as direct communication with a native of the culture helps break down stereotypes, fostering tolerance and openness to the world. Special attention during the online event was also given to discussing future academic mobility and strengthening direct contacts between Ukrainian and Kenyan researchers.

«This event clearly shows that true science and intercultural dialogue know no borders or distances. We are genuinely glad that our students have the opportunity to attend such lectures. It not only expands their worldview but also builds a strong foundation for future educational and scientific projects between Ukraine and Kenya»,

said Oksana Mararenko, Head of the International Relations Department.

The National University of Ostroh Academy expresses its sincere gratitude to Dr. Hamisi Babusa and Kenyatta University for their high professionalism, openness to partnership, and readiness to co-create a new international educational environment.
