General Information

The Department of Business Communication was established on April 8, 2005 by the decision of the Academic Council of the National University of Ostroh Academy. The staff of the Department provides teaching of the following courses: English for the first- and second-year students; English-2 for the third- and fourth-year students within both full-time and correspondence Master's Programs at the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Political Studies and Information Management. All the courses are taught to the students of all faculties in Ostroh Academy, except the College of Romance and Germanic Languages. 

According to the normative documents of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of Ukraine (2004) and the concept of Bologna Process, the work of the Department of Business Communication is focused on the instructing of English language as a language of the vocational communication. 

Scientific theme of the Department: The peculiarities of Business English for non-language specialities of higher educational establishments  (State Registration No. 0116U005532). 

Both the scientific and working curricula of the Department are composed in accordance with the scientific theme of the Department.

Resources: textbooks of Longman, Cambridge and Oxford University Press (International Express, Intelligent Business, Landmark, Natural English, New Cambridge Advanced, Just English, International Legal English, Introduction to International Legal English, Across Cultures, Market Leader, Face to Face, Cutting Edge, Upstream, English for Business Man, English for Law, Academic Encounters, etc.), audio and video recordings, multilingual and explanatory dictionaries, encyclopedias, reference books, additional literature for home reading; modern periodicals (National Geographic, News Week, The Guardian, Foreign Affairs, The Economist, The Times, The Sun, The US News and World Report, History Today, Social News, Pearson Education Limited, etc.). 

Besides traditional teaching technologies, the instructors of the Department actively use innovative and interactive resources: video, audio, DVD and CD players, computers. Therefore, three English language laboratories are equipped for these purposes (lecture rooms 6, 7, 74). Adapted and original belles-letters works with CD and DVD recordings are used for home reading tasks.

The university-wide Moodle system is used for tests and Power Point presentations developed for all core subjects, including English for law students and International Legal English certificate programme.

Within the scientific theme the educational and methodological seminar “New Trends in TESL” is held at the Department of Business Communication. The seminar agenda includes 2 training seminars conducted by native speakers and 3 scientific presentations on professinal development for the instructors.

The Department of Business Communication has developed the regulations for presentations of students' theses and passing state exams in English. 

The Department offers such certificate programmes (2016-2017):

  • “Get Ready for CAE” (the coordinator – instructor, S. Olishkevych), is confirmed by Academic council of The National University of Ostroh Academy (minutes № 1 since 01/09/2014).
  • The optional course of English language is offered for all students who want to improve their level of English language (educational services are provided over the norm, and they are determined by the curriculum of the English language optional course) (instructors: O. Khotiuk).

A workshop Gender Educational Policy in European Educational Establishments (coordinated by Liudmyla I. Lushpai) is organized each trimester at the Department of Business Communication. Workshop topics for academic year 2016-2017:

  • Main trends in gender education in secondary schools of Great Britain.
  • Gender policies in the European Union and modern pedagogy.
  • Trainings in gender tolerance of instructors as an important tendency of gender educational policy of the state.

After classes the Department holds the meeting of the English club "Chatter Box", whose topics are discussed at the meeting of the Department. In order to draw more students to extra-curricular activities, it was agreed that the club meeting will take place at each faculty.

Educational and methodical activities of the Department of Business Communication

To provide the adequate methodical supply to all courses for academic year 2016-2017, the publication of a number of methodical references’ compilations is planned:

  1. History of English (for students of Faculty of Romance and Germanic Languages) (Halyna V. Kraichynska);
  2. English for Freshers (O. Khotiuk);
  3. English Up and Down (a textbook for the 2nd and 3rd year students of Journalism Speciality) (Vadym O. Bobkov);
  4. Background of Religious Studies (Oksana Yu. Yurieva).

The Department continues to collaborate with volunteers who are English native speakers. Thus, the Department of Business Communication of NUOA drew English native speakers to giving courses throughout the academic years 2006-2017:

  • 2 instructors from the USA, Filip Lesli De Vulf and Mark D. Vitvytsky (for the academic year 2006-2007, Illinois), who gave lectures on the course of Political Science as well as on English language for the 3rd and 4th year students of Culturology and Documentation and also for the 2nd year students of History Department.
  • Instructor from Canada Morhan Bemford (2009) was drawn to lecturing for the 2nd year students of Faculty of Economics, holding meetings of English club “Chatter Box”, as well as making presentations;
  • Participants in international exchange program Canada-World-Youth Liuk Liudvigson, Briana Montor, Kodi Lonhlits, Leisi Armstronh were involved;
  • Volunteer Paul Brodaway (Canada, 2010–2017);
  • Volunteer Svitlana Novotarska (Australia, 2012–2017).
